Kulturerbe-Anerkennung

Cultural Heritage Recognition

UNESCO has officially inscribed Saudi Arabic coffee (qahwa) preparation and its associated hospitality traditions on its Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The recognition celebrates the centuries-old practice of preparing and serving coffee as a symbol of generosity and welcome in Saudi culture.

The Art of Qahwa

Saudi coffee culture encompasses:

• Selection and roasting of green coffee beans over an open flame
• Grinding with a traditional brass mortar (mihbaj) accompanied by rhythmic pounding
• Infusion with cardamom, saffron, and cloves in a dallah (traditional coffee pot)
• Serving in small cups (finjal) — always with the left hand, three sips as custom
• Accompaniment with dates, particularly Khalas and Sukkari varieties

The recognition has sparked a boom in coffee tourism across the Kingdom. New experiences include:

• Coffee farm tours in the Jazan mountains — Saudi Arabia's coffee growing region

Economic Impact

Saudi Arabia's specialty coffee market is valued at SAR 8 billion and growing at 15% annually. The Kingdom now exports premium Khawlani beans to 35 countries.

توسعة المسجد الحرام

Erweiterung der Großen Moschee

Die dritte Erweiterung des Masjid al-Haram, der Großen Moschee in Mekka, ist zu 85% fertiggestellt und auf Kurs für eine vollständige Einweihung rechtzeitig zum Hajj 2027. Das 100-Milliarden-SAR-Projekt wird die Kapazität der Moschee von 2 Millionen auf 3 Millionen gleichzeitige Betende erhöhen.

Grand Mosque Expansion

The third expansion of Masjid al-Haram, the Grand Mosque in Makkah, is 85% complete and on track for full inauguration in time for Hajj 2027. The SAR 100 billion project will increase the mosque's capacity from 2 million to 3 million worshippers simultaneously, making it the largest place of worship in the world.

New services for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims include multilingual guidance systems in 20 languages, real-time crowd management using AI, medical clinics on every floor, and a smartphone app providing indoor navigation with augmented reality wayfinding.

The expansion will allow Saudi Arabia to increase annual Hajj quotas from 2 million to 3.5 million pilgrims by 2028, supporting the Kingdom's goal of welcoming 30 million Umrah visitors annually.
